3 in a night

Date: 06-02-2010

Ah An is a hard working and lucky guys. Tonight he got three fishes in a roll. First is a 1.8kg grouper on a handline below the jetty with live prawn as bait. Then came 2kg gaf fish on a light tackle set with float and a dead tamban as bait. Awhile later he pull up a 2kg plus nurse shark from another handline with a night herring as bait. All this fishes are caught just below on a few meter away from the jetty.

Conger Eel arrived

Date: 18-01-2010     Rod: Shoreangler big game 10.2ft      Reel: Shimano Torium 20     Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader      Rig: Long snood bottom feeder       Bait: Frozen night herring

Went for a short trip as I wanted to fish on the upturn of the tide. My aim is to look for any early arrival of the cobia. Last year due to the jetty on renovation, missed out the cobia season. So this year I am hopping to target one.

As the pass days the bait fish was very rare, to play safe I bring along some frozen bait. True enough, hardly any bait fish present. Only manage to get three night herring when the night fall.

When the tide turn, the current was smooth. Around 9pm, a regular there told me my rod tip shake. I was searching for squid at that moment some distance away. When I go nearer to my rod to take alook, I know I had a hookup and most likely could be a eel.

Pickup the rod and strike. Heavy at the end. Wind in slowly and a conger eel surface. I used my rod to lift it up to the jetty as it was not very big. I didn’t weigh it but it should be around a kilogram only. It swallow my whole steel wire trace and hook. I had to operate on it stomach to take out. I given this fish to the regular who inform me about the rod tip shake.

My First Stingray of the Year

Date: 13-01-2010     Time: 9.30pm      Rod: Penn Power stick 10ft      Reel: Shimano Torium 20     Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader     Rig: Long Snood bottom feeder      Bait: Fresh night herring(tuabak)

Went there around 7pm mainly to catch squid but I also bring along one rod to cast out. Jig a few night herring as bait. Tide is coming up fast and the current is strong. Bait was very lasting. Think I only change one time.

Very strong wind tonight and the squid is rare. It hardly wanted to surface. I was still jigging for bait fish beside my squid lamp when my reel alarm goes off non stop. Quickly put down my jigging rod and rush over to pickup my rod. Strike and it on. By now my 100 meter of mono leader already totally out and the inside braided line has touch the water. Oohh…what a powerful one. As the current is strong, the fish took the advantage and stay on to do tug of wall with me. It manage to hold for awhile before giving up. Once it loosen, I pump the rod and start winding back. Once it was near to the water surface, it do a last deep dive downward but can’t go further as I put more pressure on my spool to stop it. I surface it and angler Siong was there already with his rope gaff. Easily bring up as the water was high. I weigh it and it was 8.9kg on the scale. The fish was given to Siong as I need to packup soon.

My first fish for year 2010

Date: 09-01-2010     Time: 0100am     Rod: Penn Powerstick 10ft.      Reel: Shimano Torium 20     LIne: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader      Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Bait: Fresh night herring(tuabak)      Tide: smooth current flow on up coming tide.

Reach the  jetty entrance around 6.30pm last evening and was greeted by a passing drizzle. Take cover at the shelter for awhile for the rain to pass. It take about 15 minute to clear and I headed in.

Set up one rod and casted out with a frozen dead tamban. While catching squid, a school of milk fish swim by. I manage to scoop up two to used as live bait on a cable car rig.

First check on the bait show the bottom bait was very lasting. But the cable car live milk fish has been hit on the tail part but still alive. Change to another live one and down it goes.

Not long after, the left end jetty conner  angler Ariel Shimano Torium 16 reel alarm went off. He strike but didn’t hookup. Soon after again, another Torium 16 belong to angler White also the alarm sounded and it was missed hook again. Nafi, one of the team member was joking say Torium reel no good as all can’t have a hookup. I heard it and told him hope the fish will take my torium 20.

True enough, around 1am, my reel alarm goes off. I strike and it on. I shouted to them Torium 20 hookup. Nafi and White bring along their gaff. The fish move around and I know it wasn’t a ray. It move toward the right side and very soon I surface it. It turn out to be a big queen fish. White gaff it up and it hit the scale at 5.5kg. It was  my second night queen fish at bedok jetty on a bottom feeder rig. Normally queen fish seldom feed at night.

Bedok Jetty Barracuda record smash

Date: 12-12-2009     Time: 11pm      Rod: Penn PPT Sidewinder 13.6ft      Reel: Abu 10000C     Line: 30lbs mono      Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Bait: Night Herring(Tuabak)

The jetty was so crowded last night. Some of the regular anglers return home without setting up their tackle including me. But Ah An carried on fishing as he got no transport. Another reason is he want to go and hunt for Diamond travelly today at the spot near SAF yatch club. And he has no regret of staying behind. He smash the jetty barracuda record by landing this 6.9kg beauty. I have been at the jetty for many years and I never seen or heard any barracuda landed bigger than this one. The most is about 4kg.

3.3kg Queen Fish

Date: 05-12-2009     Time: 0920am      Rod: Shoreangler Big Game 10.4ft      Reel: Daiwa Saltist STT40     Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader      Rig: Long Snood Bottom Feeder       Bait: Fresh night herring(Tuabak)

Went to the jetty last night after the rain. Decided not to fish as the water is quite cold after the afternoon heavy down pour. Only catching squid. Initially squid was slow but pick up after the tide turn. Catch until 5am and went to my mobile home to rest. Wakeup at 7.20am and headed back to the jetty with two rods.

Tamban (herring) was very rare so I used the night herring I prepare last night for bait. Tide is coming up and the current is smooth with the sea surface very calm. Great chances for fishing as compare to last night water. No live bait so both rod are on bottom fishing without cable car rig.

Bait was lasting by initial check. But I change it after every two wind back. At 9.20am, I was walking around when suddenly I saw my rod tip bend downward follow by the reel alarm sound. I was a bit disbelieve of seeing this happened as I never thought I can catching fishes on continuous weekend after the two G.T.

Automatically I still rush forward to strike. The fish make a acrobatic jump on the water surface and I know it was a queen fish took my bottom feeder bait. It started to move left and I follow by winding back line. It make few deep dash when near to the jetty. After some hard pump on the rod, I manage to bring it to surface. I call out to a regular there who come over and gaff it up for me.
