Four Fishes in a night

Date: 16-11-2013

Total of four fishes were caught by my friends last nite…All are on fresh squid bait with a long snood bottom feeder rig.

First one was a 1.2kg grouper by SF around near to 7pm when the sky about to turn dark. His Penn slammer pair with a Shimano TLD star alarm sounded. He go to strike and wind in this nice grouper…I took his squid net to scoop it up.

Around 8pm plus…Ah An Century Vectra rod pair with his Shimano Torium 30 alarm sounded. He strike and a fish jump out of water surface…easily he wind in a 2.5kg barracuda(Top photo). I used my hand to grab his leader and haul it up the jetty.

10 pm plus…Ah An heard a water splash of fish jumping…He went check all the fishing rods….He found Ah Hong Century Vectra rod pair with a Shimano Trinidad reel line slack….He pump and found it heavy….wind in a 2.9kg Barracuda quietly. He used the rod to lift it up.(Sorry no photo as owner not around at time of catch)

11.50pm…While I walk pass Ah Hong Centuary rod after casting mine…I found his line straighten at and unusual angle. There was no current at that time and I know SF has just cast this rod out not long after changing bait for Hong. I decided to go for a strike to check….Endup heavy at the end of the line…I know it had a hookup but there was no struggling at all. Wind back and it was a golden catfish around 3kg. SF grab hold of the leader and haul it up. ( sorry no photo also)

Caught the 3kg stingray around 8.30pm when the tide is about to full. It take the bait and cause my reel alarm go screaming. I pickup and strike…fish on…but small size…Easily i wind back..but i didn’t use my rod to lift it up….Instead…I ask ah Boi to take his gaff to gaff it…As he is new and never try before…I let him  practice how to gaff a fish..He got it on the second try but is no forcefull enough as the gaff didn’t sink in deep. Lucky the fish is no big…otherwise might have some difficulty of bringing it up.

Ah Boi packup around 9pm…I choose to stay until 10pm…He wind back but his squid bait was still nicely on the hook. I told him to pass it to me so that I can use on my next bait change.

Around 10pm….I decided to packup….While I was keeping my squid net…suddenly I heard my reel screech…I went to strike…Yes…another hookup….I thought it was a marine catfish while I winding it back…but it turn out to be a small threadfin when I lift it out from the water..

Wolf Herring

Date: 03-08-2013    Time: 0830am     Rod: Penn Slammer 9.8ft(white)      Reel: Daiwa Saltist 40     Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs leader     Rig: Cable car      Bait: Live tamban

Finish of last night fishing at around 11.30pm to get some sleep. Wakeup around 7am and finish off washup, eat breakfast and go toilet before I rush down to the jetty to catch the last two hours of incoming high tide. So rush until I forgot to take my handphone along.

Reach jetty setup two sets of tackles. Casted out both with bottom feeder n only one cable car rig on one of the rod on the left . But one angler come n place a rod with cable car rig n float just beside my rod on the left. The leader was so long….To avoid entangle..I shifted the cable car rig to the rod on the right.

Moment later I saw my right rod tip rattle…the line gone loose…I strike and the fish jump up on the water surface…Ya…Wolf herring….I slowly wind in the line…then use my rod to lift it up…1.4kg…nice big wolf herring.

Ah Boi caught this 7.5kg Male Stingray when the tide was on the way down. The reel alarm scream when the fish took the bait. Ah Boi strike but the fish take the line out. After awhile he still unable to gain line back. I took over the rod as I wanted him to land his first ray..After some struggling…I manage to bring the fish to surface. I then told him to take over the rod while I gaff it up.

Twin Queen and King

Date: 30-06-2013     Time: 0010am & 0200am      Rod: Centuary Vectra 13.6ft      Reel: Shimano Torium 30     Line 40lbs mono     Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Bait: Fresh squid

Twin(two) Queenfish n King size(some of the biggest caught at jetty)..Yes…ah An was a lucky man last night…The fish just love his bait..

The first one come around just pass mid night….the reel alarm go screaming…Ah Hong was the fastest to reach the rod…but he hesitate to strike…because it was not his rod…We had to shout for him to strike the rod as the alarm keep going…He strike but in a mess…first was the strike was not forcefull…due to he never thumb on the spool…follow by a birdnest of line in the reel…I shouted for him to lower the rod for me to hold the main fishing line as he untie the mess up line…but he didn’t..Luckily the fish was still in hook after he manage to free all the mess up…I told him to strike one more time to secure the hookup…The fish swim inward toward the jetty…after some struggle…it surface…I gaff it up and it was such a big queen fish…weighing 6.4kg…Wow! Tide was on the way up..

2am…suddenly i heard a thunder somewhere in the south west side…afraid that it might rain…I decided to stop catching squid…and I went to cut up the queen fish as no body want it…Half way through…Ah An reel alarm sound again…He went for it and strike…I had to stop the cutting and prepare his gaff…He fought the fish awhile before able to surface it…Well is is a queen fish again….I gaff it up and it weigh 6.3kg…Haha…both fish could be come from the same school of big queenie that swim pass the jetty and attracted by his fresh squid bait. End up I had to cut up two fishes..and alots of fish n chip to eat for days to come…

His Personal Best

Rod: Century Vectra 13.6ft     Reel: shimano Torium 30     Line: 30lbs mono     Rig: Long snood bottom feeder    Bait: fresh squid

It was already 2 plus in the early morning….I was getting sleepy…so I decide to packup….While I almost ready to move off….Suddenly…Ah An reel alarm go screaming…..Ya….almost full tide now and the fish bite again…Ah An strike it and play….I getting ready his gaff….This time it look the fish is bigger…It gave ah An alot of pump n dive…After sometime…the fish come nearer to the jetty but refuse to surface due to the brightness of the jetty light….but ah An almost shakeout…I took over the rod…I make some pump and the fish was almost up…but it has entangle another angler line….so I had to hold on and get the other angler to release his line….Finally…I surface and Ah An gaff it up….Another female ray at 15kg in weight…a personal record heavy catch for him.
