DATE: 21-05-2007   TIME: 11.45pm    ROD: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft    REEL: Penn 500L Jigmaster   LINE: 30lbs mono   RIG: Long snood bottom feeder    BAIT: Dead fresh Tamban (Herring)

Weather was good n the tide is just nice. Decided to sacrifice some sleep tonight n go squid catching. Reach there the sky still bright n manage to jig for about 10pcs of tamban. I have bring some frozen one along but still fresh one is the best. After casting out my rod, proceed to setup my squid lamp n net. Night fall n some squid start to arrived. One by one it come at interval. Did check my bait n was very lasting. Looking at the smooth moving current n the calm sea surface..Haha…tonight no wind……I know I stand a great chances. Did have some false alarm but only to hook up some rubbish.

Finally…I hear the sound I waiting for…It was almost midnight already. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….my reel alarm goes off. Haha…pickup my rod n strike…Yes….Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz it goes pulling along my line…..Woooooo……that shiokkkkk…Then I heard a water splash….Wow…it jump up the water surface….Hahaha…my mind started to think…At night only three types of fishes will jump up the surface…COBIA….likely as it was so strong….THREADFIN….not likely as here the threadfin don’t fight so strong…BARRACUDA…same reason as the threadfin…Hmmmm…By now the fish has started to swim inward..I wind my line as fast as possible until I feel the weight. It has headed towards the under of the jetty n has cross some line…Now every body is crowding round to see what fish. I shouted to those rod owner to release their line…They do so n I was able to steer the fish out. Hoho…..the most unexpected fishes to caught at night has surface….The Queenfish again….My third three days in the row. But this one is BIGGGGGG. It also my third night caught queenfish after so many years of fishing. One angler offer to help me hold the rod so that I can go n get my gaff. Easily gaff it n haul it up. Eager to know the weight….I took out my scale n weigh it….Hoho….It tip the scale at 5.6kg….n I have re-wrote my personal best on QueenFish from surffishing. Hahaha….very satisfying…..Wow….now it already pass midnight….The fish so big how to put in the fridge ????….Hoho…no choice….have to do the cutting…One old friend come along n I ask him to watch for the squid while I do the cutting..I fillet it out. After this two days practicing….I am more perfect now on cutting…Hehe….job easily done…n time to packup…Haha…by now it was already 1.30am….Morning guys…

Bigger Queenfish

Date: 20-05-2007   Time: 10.20am    Rod: Daiwa Long Cast 12ft.   Reel: Abu 7000 Red    Line: 25lbs mono    Rig: Cable car rig    Bait: LIve Tamban

Bedok jetty was crowded on saturday evening. But the sky was full of rain cloud n lightning when I reach there. Waited for almost 2 hour for the sky to clear before I set up my light to catch squid. Casted one rod out with dead tamban as bait n it was so lasting. Whole night I only need to change one time bait. This gave me the chance to concentrate on catching the squid. Was there until 2am n decide to packup to take a rest.  Went in to the jetty again this morning around 7.30am. Tide was at the lower end n current was slow. While waiting for the tide to turn around, I spent time jigging for tamban n keep it alive. Finally the tide turn up around 9.15am. Down goes the cable car rig. Another rod with a bottom feeder rig. !0.20am I finally hear the sound I waiting for.. My abu reel alarm went off with a short screech. Just nearby so pickup n strike..The fish make a acrobatic jump on the sea surface n dive deep down. Haha…but I already catch a glime of it. Yes….queenie n bigger than yesterday one. Gave that fellow a hard pump n it was on the way up. However it has cross two line by now n make up some messy there. I told the other two anglers to release the line so that I have a better control on it. I bring it to the surface n hang it head up in the air. Within minute it already slump n I ask one guy to grab hold of my leader n lift it up. Hoho…it about near to 2kg. Decided to take home as it was already half dead. Plus the yesterday one…haha…I will be having fish fillet very soon.

Went to catch squid yesterday night. Only manage to caught some as when tide midway up there is a strong surface wind n that cause the squid to take cover. 11.00pm plus the weather change n it started to rain heavily with lightning n thunder. The rain only stop at 2am this morning n I continue to fish until about 3am. Went to take a rest n wakeup around 7.30am. After have a quick breakfast, I headed in to the jetty again. It was quite empty this morning think due to the rain. Setup two rods one for bottom n the other for cable car rig. Manage to jig some live tamban to use. Around 8.45am..the rod that using the cable car rig alarm went off..I was just sitting next to it so I just grab it n strike..A small queenie jump above the water surface..I wind in the line n just use the rod to lift it up..Haha…it is the first fish landed this morning at the jetty. I continue to fish until about 12pm. In between there are other who caught queenie n eel also.

Was home early so when for some workout..Hehehe…weather was warm so sweating is no problem…9.30pm…Tide was turning up n bait was lasting. While I was looking for squid under my lamp…I heard a small screech on my reel. When over n saw my rod tip was shaking…This is the second time I casted out on the same bait. Gave my rod a strike n feel some struggling at the end of the line. Was thinking in my heart haha…this could be something good…When surface…haha…endup become a conger eel about 1 over kg. Use my rod to lift it up. Quite surprise this fish appear around this time…At bedok jetty here…mostly this fish will come only on the year end when the weather is cooler.

Baby Barracuda

Date: 20-04-2007

Caught this small barracuda last night while catching squid. It took my tamban bait when the tide was about to full. I didn’t notice it when my line gone loose. I tighten it n continue my squid catching. It was only when I wanted to change my bait and I retrieve my line that I realise there is this small fish already dead at the end of the hook. hahaha…a small present from the sea dragon king.

Wolf Herring at Bedok Jetty

Date: 14-04-2007

Went to bedok jetty around 7.00pm yesterday night for squid catching n fishing. Bait was lasting but turn out no action. Squid also rare as the season hasn’t start yet. Stop around 1am this morning n went to take a rest. Wakeup at 6.30am n start fishing again at 7am. Tamban was everywhere in the early morning but turn rare when the sun is high up. Very lucky landed this nice wolf herring around 9am plus when the tide turning down. It was caught on a cable car rig with a live herring as bait.

Short Tail Brown Stingray

Date: 27-03-06   Time: 9.15pm   Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster   Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Hook: Long shank size 5/0 with steel wire trace.   Bait: Fresh Tamban

It was drizzling the whole day. I finish my work early n check on the tide table. There is a good running tide started from 1601hrs 0.3m to a high of 2.6m at 2239hrs tonight. Very lucky the drizzle stop around 5.30pm. Decide to go for some squid catching. I also bring along my heavy surf rod which I normally don’t during weekday trip.

After a fast dinner, I grab my squid lamp n off I go. It was still bright when I reach the jetty. Only a few young angler around. Don’t see any regular there as I think because of the drizzle earlier. Infact I was the only one with a heavy surf rod. Hehe… tonight is all my world. Fixed up my squid net n saw a group of tamban swimming around. One scoop n up it come about five. Setup n tackle n down it goes. Bait was quiet lasting on initial check. Current was running fast up. Squid was hardly seen. Can’t even get a pickup after 9pm. I change my bait on my second wind back as it already smash by the fast current n some crab bite.

Around 9.15pm, my reel alarm goes off. I pickup n strike. Wow! powerful! It took off my line n goes. Ripping out about 50 meter of line non stop. When it finally stop, I saw my reel only left half spool of line. Without hesitation, I pump it up n start winding back my line. After I sure it has up from the seabed, I relax a bit as I prepare to wear the fish down. I am alone now n I might have to gaff it myself after I bring it in. The fish do a few more tug of war with me but I am in total control. A while later, very lucky for me a old bjt kaki (Fei) come along cycling. He saw me fighting the fish n offer to gaff it for me. His first attempt to gaff it fail n the fish make a desperate run. I manage to bring it back to surface n ask Fei to hold my rod for me instead. Took over the gaff n sink it deep in. Easily lifted up n it was a short tail double spike brown stingray. It tip the scale at 7.2kg. After this I only able to scoop about 6 small squid n I packup around 12.30am when the sky turn very red with lots of rain cloud gathering.

Big Puffer

Caught this puffer about 2kg this early morning around 3am. It quietly took my bait of a small cuttle fish on a long snood bottom feeder rig n the line gone loose. It gave some strong struggle when about to surface. Too heavy to be lifted up by my Daiwa rod so I use hand to grab the leader instead. It was release back after photo taking.

my first fish on year 2006

Date: 02-01-2006    Time: 0800hrs to 1500hrs.   Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft.   Reel: Shimano Calcutta 400S     Line: 20lbs mono    Rig: Single hook short snood bottom feeder.    Bait: Cut squid.    Hook: Beak size 5/0.

Rain, rain n rain. Yesterday night can’t fish all because of rain. Lucky this morning the weather was fine. Off I go around 8am. Went to the first spot but it was already occupied. No choice just drive along the east coast n look see look see. When come to this place, suddenly come to my mind that it have been more than ten year I didn’t fish at this place. Haha… take alook there n it was not crowded. Decide to gave it a try. Tide was already coming in fast but current was smooth. Quickly two rod was casted out with single hook short snood bottom feeder rig. Baits was left over squid from friday night. Didn’t bring much bait so a single squid was cut into two to save bait. Bait casted out was not lasting also.
It was my second round of bait changes when I was about to cast out the second rod, suddenly, zeer…zeer… zeerr….my shimano 400S calcutta reel was screaming. Quickle put down my second rod n pick up the first rod to strike. Yes, can feel the heavy weight at the end of the line. By now some malay anglers already gather around to see what fish is it. I told them it was a pari. The fish initially swim to my left. I quickly steer it to the right as this place the left side is quite hazard. Luckly the fish is not so big n I manage to bring it close without much effort. When it surface, it was a long tail brown spotted stingray about one over kilo. A malay angler help me to bring up this fish by grabing onto my rig body. After photo taking I gave him the fish to take home. Haha… finally landed my first fish for year 2006.
