Flat Head

Date: 14-02-2015     Time: 20.00      Rod: Murugen Pathfinder 7ft.     Reel: Silstar AT80 Spinning reel.     Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono.     Rig: Short Snood bottom feeder      Bait: Live kambong.

As tonite high tide is early at around 8.30pm, after that the current is slow. So i decided to bring another rod to target the big barramundi below the jetty. Bait fish was very rare this afternoon. I started to jig around 4.30pm but only able to get a few. Among it was a small kambong fish. I decide to use it on a live bait cable car rig.

No taker even until 6.30pm. I decided to switch tactic. I change the position of the rod and also the rig to short snood bottom feeder. My target…the big barramundi below. Using the same live bait, I lower it down the jetty.

Around 8pm, I saw my 7ft rod rattle alittle. I decide to check, well… it turn up this flat head grab my live bait. As no more live bait and the current has die down, I call it a day.

Ah An caught this Yellow tail catfish or Mayon early this morning when the tide was mid way up. The fish pull his line when the current was fast. I strike it for him before passing the rod back to him to fight. As we got other rods to wind back, I ask him to play it slowly until I get my gaff ready. I gaff it and it weigh around 5kg. Earlier he also landed a conger eel around a kg plus. Using the same bait which was still intact, he casted out again and it attracted this catfish. So it is one squid bait two fishes landed.

Tackle: Ah Boi – Custom rod 12ft n Shimano Torium 20

Ah Fei – Penn Slammer 10.6ft n Penn Squall 40

Three anglers….four fishes…this thing seldom happen at jetty…but last nite it does…

We started out jigging tamban for bait before dark….then we setup our tackles….Not long after that….Ah Boi got his first fish on a cable car rig….A 5kg queenie take his live bait and let his reel go screaming….I was beside it and I took the rod and strike…the fish make two acrobatic jump on the water surface and was bring in by Ah Boi himself after I pass the rod back to him. I gaff it up.

Next was Ah Fei…his reel screech when the tide start to turn up….We initally thought it caught a floating rubbish…until we saw something jumping out of water far away…Fei wind back a 1kg plus barracuda….he use his rod to lift it up.

Not long after….Ah Fei reel start to sceam again…..It turn out a small marine catfish around a kg. Again he use his rod to lift it up.

Then…later in the night….ah Boi move his rod to another spot…and he got his jackpot…His reel scream again….The fish again make a acobatic jump far away…..but ah Boi bring it in….it turn out to another queenfish…I gaff it up…it weigh slightly lighter….4.75kg.
