Gar fish

Date: 18-03-2017       Time:11.30am      Rod: Sea Hawk 12ft 3 pcs joint.      Reel: Daiwa 3000 spinning.       Line: 10lbs braided       Rig: Cable car      Bait: live Tamban

Went there around 9am. The sea was very choppy due to the strong eastern wind. Tide is coming up and the current was smooth. Bait fish have but have to cast far out to reach them. Manage to get enough for my own use.

I cast out three sets of tackle with two bottom bait and one live bait on surface. Bottom bait was lasting but just no fish bite. It still the live bait that work. Around 11.30am, this gar fish took the bait causing my rod tip to rattle. I waited until it swallow the hook and jump up the water surface before i strike and wind in. Easily using my rod to lift it up.IMG_20170318_115710_1489824617825

After this i use another live bait and lower it down again. Another gar took it and i caught another one.(no photo). I stop using this method after this as I don’t want keep getting this fish. Both fishes is given to and old uncle(wak) there. He quickly cut both fish up and went home.

Double Gar

Date: 25-02-2017      Time: 7.30am to 12pm.     Rod: Silstar Traverse X 12.6ft      Reel: Shimano Torium 20      Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader     Rig: Cable car      Bait: Live tamban.

This morning high tide at 10.20am, so i started off early. Setup my two sets of tackles and start jigging for live bait. Only manage to get two. One i use as live bait on a cable car rig and another one by a bottom feeder.

Not long after this I got my first hit. a Gar fish took my live bait and run..cause my reel alarm to have a screech…I strike my rod and start winding back my line…the fish did a jump on the water surface. As it is not big, I just wind in and use my rod to lift it up.

After this, the water current stop and totally can’t get any live bait fish. It was until the water change direction and start turning down then I manage to caught one.

Quickly rig it and lower it down. Within second…another Gar took the bait. Same it pull along the line and when dive deep. I waited until it pull hard again before I strike and start wind back my line. As usual, it make a jump out of the water surface. Easily I bring it in and lift it up with my rod. Double hit today on surface. but bottom zero as the bait below is not lasting.

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share a quick update that I’ve been facing some challenges reviving shoreangler.8m.com and beachangler.8m.com due to technical issues.

While I have managed to move several years of content over, some of you may find that some of the pages that you enjoyed may not be available at the moment. I will continue to try my best to bring back as much of the cherished stories and photographs in the weeks to come.
In the meantime, I am excited to put together new information for this site. Do keep a look out for our updates and hope you’ll continue to enjoy them as much!

Two bait one fish

Date: 11-02-2017    Time: 0900 hrs     Rod: Penn Power stick 10ft.     Reel: Silstar AT80 spinning   Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader      Rig: Cable car       Bait: Live tamban

Headed down to the jetty early this morning as the tide full at 11am. So it only a few hour left to try my luck. Water is mid way up n current is smooth. But to my surprise, bait fish is super rare. After twenty minute of jigging here n there….none at all. Then come  Sam…a regular tamban jigger. He caught two and pass it to me.
I quickly use a live one on a cable car rig and lower it on one set of tackle. The other tamban i cast it out on a bottom feeder rig with another set of tackle.

Continue on my bait jigging but still no catches. Then 9am…Sam shouted to me fish on…I turn around n saw my rod tip bent…line running out….then a fish jump out from the water surface…Haha…Queen fish… It then dive downward…taking more line…. I tighten more drag on the spool…then the fish swim inward…I wind back my line fast…until I feel tension again.
It leap out of the water once again…after this i manage to take control and surface it…another angler there come with a rope gaff and pull it up. It weigh 3.5kg.

Almost 9am…on seeing the sky a bit clearer…I headed down prepare for the worst. Bring along just one set of tackle and one frozen tamban for the first cast. Start jigging and manage to get two…that all. Change my bait half n hour later…..

Then…around 10.15am….my reel alarm screech….I strike…FISH ON….again it swim with the current flow…then surface…Haha…same fish…but smaller…

Once infront of jetty, upon seeing the hook in the mouth, I use my rod to lift it up….haha…3 in three days.

Beside my catch…I saw two queenfish and a huge saitoh being caught by others angler.

My First fish for year 2017

Date:01-01-2017     Time:09.40am     Rod: Penn Slammer 10.6ft White.     Reel: Shimano Torium 20     Line 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader      Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Bait: Defrost kunning

With yesterday successful catch, I heading down this morning again arm with only two frozen kunning. As i know yesterday the bait was so lasting, I know chances are high.

Setup two sets of tackle and casted out. Follow by try jigging for any live bait. Got a live kunning and hook on a cable car rig and slight down on one set of tackle.

Very fast, a small little garfish come and take. Rod rattle but missed. Jig again…but part of tamban rig was cut off by a strong jerk. Haha…sinker gone…need to re-tie.

Before I able to tie another sinker, my other rod n reel alarm sounded. I pickup and strike….yup…FISH ON…It swim to my right along with the current flow….I can feel not very big. Then it surface…WOW!…back fin again….hahaha..I shouted for Yusof…who is at the mid part of jetty…”Auran Tasik”(cobia in malay)…

By now the fish already infront of the jetty…I had total control of it. Yusof come along with his friend scooping net. He want to scoop it instead of gaff. After few try….fish on jetty floor…haha…my first fish for year 2017. Smaller as compare with yesterday one…weigh 4.2kg.

My Long Waited Cobia

Date: 31-12-2016     Time:10.45am     Rod: Penn Slammer 10.6ft White.     Reel: Shimano Torium 20      Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader     Rig: Long snood bottom feeder    Bait: Selarpan

Has been very long didnt fish day time at the jetty. As the squid season come to an end, I decided to do some day fishing. Today tide was good as it high at around 12pm. Looking at the weather, it show only afternoon than got rain. So I went to wet my line this morning.

Bait fish is hard to get. I jig quite long and none at all. A regular aunty there offer me a small selarpan as she use prawn meat to caught it. I take her offer and cast out my first set of tackle. I follow up using a cable car rig on the same tackle with a live tamban when i caught it.

Ten minute later, I saw my rod tip rattle…I strike the rod and wind in a small todak fish caught by the cable car rig. I gave the todak fish to some Bangala worker who were there as they don’t work on the last day of the year. The bottom bait on my rig was still intact so I cast it out again.

The weather now become clearer so i decided to set up my second set of tackle. While I was tying my long snood to the rig, I notice my line went slack. I pickup the rod and strike…heavy feeling at the end. Then a fish back fin appear on the water surface….Haha…this is the fish I had waiting for…Four years already….COBIA…It swim toward my right….I got worried as there is four rods n line over there. Sure to entangle as they didn’t keep their line. I use my rod to steer it back…Luckily…the fish turn and swim inward. I wind back as quick as possible to prevent it from going under the jetty. By the time it near the jetty I already in total control of the fish. Swallow hook…thats the best. I ask one guy to hold my rod as I set up my gaff. Maybe I am getting old or too “kancheong” as i missed two gaff before got it on the third time.

Fish on the jetty floor…time to celebrate…haha…I am so happy….Take picture and weigh..5kg…smaller as compare to my two previous catches…But….Satisfy…a catch before 2016 ended.

Long Tail Brown Stingray

Date: 13-11-2015      Time:2015hrs     Rod: Century 12ft.     Reel: Daiwa Saltist 40     Line: 30lbs braided with 40lbs mono leader     Rig: Long snood pully rig.     Bait: Dead Tamban

Tide was on the way up. Current flow was smooth. Bait was lasting. Ah Boi was talking to us he had long time didn’t landed any biggie as he now seldom fish due to family commitment. Then…suddenly we hear reel alarm sounded…..Yes…it was ah Boi reel…He ran over to strike….we are all very excited….as recently there is many biggie manage to escape after hookup due to many reason. I determined to help him bring this one up…This time round I get my gaff ready.

After some hard fight, the fish is giving way…After confirm that it was a stingray, I decide to use ah An gaff as it was bigger in size. One gaff and it was in. I decide to use another gaff to play safe to lift this heavy load up the jetty.

On landed, it was a long Tail brown stingray weigh 16.1kg. It is the biggest fish so far landed at jetty this year. It is also Ah Boi personal best in weight by surfcasting. The fish is later cut out to many parts and share among our friends.

A Night with Double Catch

Date: 17-06-2015      Time: around 10pm.      Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.      Reel: Okuma Cortez 12       Line: 30lbs mono      Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Bait: squid

Ah Joe hard work paid off….He first caught the 2.8kg Baramundi on a handline below the jetty. The fish took his live squid bait and run off below the jetty. Joe was fast enough to pull it out in time before the fish entangle with the jetty pillar. I used my squid net to scoop it up.

Joe 2.8kg baramundi photo kbl2.8kg20150617-.jpg

Before he settle down on the catch, his reel alarm sounded. He pick and strike….yes fish on….The fish gave him some fight before he gain control. Winding in was a nice n rare 2.6kg Gerut. I gaff it up.
