Four strike, one up, three missed

Date: 30-12-2006   Time: Morning.

That the result of this morning catch. Lots of bait fish around n it attract a gang of small queenfish chasing after them. I use cable car rig with live tamban as bait to target this surface predator. But the disadvantage of this rig is the auto hook set is not deep as the tension on the main line between the rod tip n the sinker is not very tight. Once the queenie do a acrobatic jump before U strike they will be able to throw out the hook.

My Christmas Present

Date: 25-12-2006   Time: 11.00am   Rod: Penn Powergraph surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn Jigmaster 500L.   Line: 30lbs mono.   Rig: Cable car     Bait: Live tamban.

Wakeup at around 6.20am. After washup it started to rain. Wait till about 8am when the rain stop n proceed down to the jetty. It was already too late for targeting the selar. After setting up my rod, started to do jigging. After some hard work still able to hit three selar hiding at those jetty pillar. Only one tamban was caught n quickly hookup on the cable car rig. Current was slow on the uptide n bait was lasting. It was waiting game now as bait fish was also rare.

Around 11am, I saw my rod tip was shaking. Without waiting I strike n it was hookup. Without much problem, a small queenie was seen at the end of the line. I use the rod to flip it up. Ya..my chrismas present has finally arrived. My wife who was also with me manage to caught her small little present promfet with her ultra light spinning tackle with tiny little shrimp as bait. The rig was a set of tamban rig. We packed up around 1.00pm when the sun is too hot to bare n it was also getting abit too crowded.

Marine Catfish Gathering

Was at bedok jetty on both 22 n 23-12-2006 night. I landed one on each night by using tamban as bait. Saw those who purposely target them caught as many as ten by using sotong. Estimate each night about near to 50 fishes with difference sizes was caught. Biggest is about 1kg plus while smaller one is just slightly more then 100g.

Same spot, same type of fish n same thing happen

Date; 10-12-2006  Time: 0215am   Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster    Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Long snood bottom feeder.   Hook: Steel wire SS long shank hook size 5/0   Bait: Frozen small cuttle fish.

In this world, sometime things can happen twice the same. The whole thing just happen like a repeat. Three weeks ago I caught a marine catfish at this place(same spot) and yesterday night it just happen again. Not only the same type of fish but the whole drama just like a replay.

It was about to full tide. I have casted this cuttle fish bait out for hours ago as tonight the bait was very lasting. The tide look promising n I was expecting to have a hookup before the tide full. It just happen like the last time.

My reel has a short screech n I pickup n strike. It straight away got into snag. I can feel a fish is at the end of the line. Try pumping the rod a few time but fail to free it. Knowing that my sinker it the one that got snag, I do the samething like last time. Put down my rod n loosen the main line. This gave the fish some space to move about. It really do n free my sinker out. Once I saw my rod tip move, I gave a hard pump on the rod n its up. Without trouble I just wind in the line n swing it up the jetty. Yes…a 1-2kg Marine catfish.

Marine Catfish

Date: 25-11-2006  Time: 1am   Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn Jignaster 500L     Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Long snood bottom feeder    Bait: Squid

Caught this marine catfish when the tide was about to full. It took my bait n cause my reel alarm to have a little sound. There is another two rod beside mine n they rush to strike thinking that it was their’s reel alarm sound. Haha…. it turn out to be mine when I went over to take alook as I was busy catching squid. I gave my rod a hard strike when I saw my line has move side way. It get snag immediately n in my mind thought was a big monster ray which normally suck on the seabed when they catches a bait. Try a few hard pumping with my rod but is just don’t move. No choice I rest my rod n release my main line alittle hoping with less tension the fish will make a move so that I have a chance to pump it up.

By now there is already a crowd of anglers gather around waiting to see the fish. I told them if the fish can make a little move I will be able to get it up. If it don’t then there is no much choice. True enough, five minute later, I saw my rod tip has bend down n without hesitation I strike hard n pump up. Yes, it is free n leaving no chance I wind it all the way back. Haha… it turn out to be just a marine catfish near to 2kg. Think the reason for snagging was it could be my grip sinker was pull by the fish n got snag somewhere. After I release the tension of the line, It gave the fish to have a chance to move n at the sametime it free up my sinker also.

Double Spike Brown Stingray

Date: 28-10-2006   Time: 0215am   Rod: Daiwa Sumurai Surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn 155L Beachmaster.  Line: Braided 30lbs.   Rig: Short snood bottom feeder   Hook: S/S short shank Live bait size 2/0   Bait: Fresh small squid.

As usual went to the jetty every friday night to catch squid n fishing. Reach there around 7.30pm. Tide was at the bottom end. No current at all. Now aday I only set up one rod as too busy if the squid is around. Initial bait was frozen tamban. But whatever cast down was finish off within minute. Tide started to turn up around 8.30pm but current was slow. It was until about 12am mid night then the current start to move faster n the bait was more lasting. Seeing this, I decided to change on the fresh squid. First two squid gone without action. I change the third one around 2am. Fifteen minute later my reel alarm has a short scream. I went for the rod n the alarm start to scream again. Pickup n strike. Yes…heavy at the end. It make one deep dive n relax. At one point I thought it has missed hook as my rod tip gone light without tension. But actually the fish was swimming in toward my direction. On notice this, I crank my reel handle like mad trying to catch up with the fish before it went under the jetty. Luckily manage to catch up with it n by the time its near the jetty it already surface up. One of my friend use his rope gaff to bring it up for me. It was a male brown ray with two spike. My hook was deeply hook inside the throat. It weigh at 4kg. The fish was later cut up n given out to few guys.

Lizard Shark

Date: 17-07-2006   Time: 8 to 11pm.   Rod: Daiwa longcast 12ft.   Reel: Penn 155L Beachmaster.   Line: 30lbs Braided line    Rig: Long snood bottom feeder    Bait: Strip of green eye(chay mak)

Went to search for squid. Only catch a handful as the tide is near the bottom n current has already slow down. But lucky there is no wind. Around 9pm saw my rod tip a bit shaking n went to strike it. Something heavy at the end but it keep me guessing when winding back. It turn out to be a lizard shark slightly more than 0.5kg. This was my first cast n the bait was a left over green eye strip from last friday night which I has prepare ready for a cast but never use it. I bring it back n keep in the freezer for future use. Haha…

Another Queenfish Today

Date: 16-07-2006 Time: 3.30pm Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft. Reel: Shimano Calcutta 400S Line: 20lbs mono Rig: Long snood bottom feeder. Bait: Dead Tamban.

Skip yesterday night trip as the wind is too strong n sea is choppy. Choose to fish at daytime as it not so windy. Reach there around 10am. The tide has already incoming n the current was smooth. Missed my first one around 12pm when it took the bait on my cable car rig but the line gone loose. By the time I strike it already gone.

Half an hour later lost another one on the same method. Think over it could be the on coming wind that cause it. Reason is when the fish took the bait, my sinker will move n my main line will curve n loosen due to the wind blow. So there is no tension to help set the hook.

Decide to change rig n do bottom fishing instead. I use a long snood bottom feeder rig but I push my hook line high up to about 2ft above the sinker instead of the normal 6 inches. Reason is queenie will go bottom but not to the seabed as like the ray. I have use this method long ago before I start the cable car rig.

Haha… It finally work the third time…when my alarm goes off… I strike n yes hookup..the fish do a acrobatic jump n heading toward my right. To avoid entanglement, I use my rod to steer it back to my side as there is few rod there. As now the water is high, I play to weaken it n grab hold of my leader n lifted it up. Estimate about 2kg plus in weight.

Brown Dog Shark

17062005.jpg

Date: 17-06-2005   Time:10.45pm    Rod: SureCatch Pro Beach 13ft.    Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster    Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Single hook long snood bottom feeder.   Bait: Frozen squid     Hook: S/S Long shank 4/0

Check with the weather report and it was find at this place. Reach there around 7pm. It was already quite crowded there. Tide was about to full but current flow is slow. Set up to catch squid but none was on sight. Only set up one rod with a bottom feeder rig. Bait was frozen squid. Initial check on the bait show quite lasting. This type of sign show chances of hooking up a fish is great. When the tide turn down, current flow was good but still no sign of any squid. I decide to keep my kerozene lamp and concentrate on the fishing. Just change my bait and casted out. Suddenly saw my line gone loose. Strike and feel some struggle at the end of the line. Initial thought it was a marine cat fish. When it surface, it was a brown dog shark about near to two kilo. On seeing it not so big, I just use my rod to lift it up. Nothing happen after this and I packed up around 2am.
