No Escape This Time.

Date: 10-06-2007   Time: 0240am    Rod: Penn Slammer 10.6ft    Reel: Daiwa LD 50SH    Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Long Snood bottom Feeder     Bait: Dead Tamban(herring)

Two years back he missed one due to too “kan chong” n fall down before he pickup the rod to strike. But this time he make no mistake. He is Xiao Hei, one of my forum member n bedok jetty kaki. They were fishing at the left end side while i fish on the right end side. But when the alarm went off, I can hear it screaming.

It was already the early morning of sunday. Most anglers has either left there or already sleeping. Only some hard working one is still hanging around. It was quite quiet by now as compare to the early night. Tide is half way up n about to change direction. Suddenly i heard reel alarm sounded. From my side I look toward the left side. I saw Xiao Hei rushing toward his rod follow by LK. Xiao Hei pickup the rod first n strike…haha.. n I heard LK say….”wow U so fast le” hehe…

Yes…the fight is on… From far it look like could be a stingray…His Slammer rod is fully bend….hoho… big one…..They started to shout for me to get gaff…Haha… I was already preparing…When my gaff is ready…the fish has swim toward my side n Xiao Hei has come over n are winding back line. When the fish surface…WOw !….COBIA……haha…The fish try a few time wanted to swim below the jetty but was stop by this fast learner angler. He stand on the jetty railing n use his rod to have full control of the fish..I missed the first gaff when the fish is struggling furiously…Xiao Hei manage to calm it down by lifting the head above water. I take the chance to gaff on it stomach. With Raymond help…I lifted it up to the jetty flooring….LK bring out a scale n I weigh it. It tip the scale at 11.8kg. Hoho… second cobia landed this year….what next ?????

Lunar New year gift

Date: 20-02=2007  Time: 10am   Rod: ATC Pro Beach 13ft   Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster   Line: 30lbs mono  Rig: Long snood bottom feeder   Bait: Fresh dead tamban

After three days of eating n drinking, early morning headed down to the jetty hopefully for some workout. After setting up my tackle, manage to jig for some tamban as bait. Tide was coiming up with fast current but the sea was calm. Bait was very lasting. One of my friend Chuan join me awhile later. Around 10am, saw my rod the tip shake a bit. When over to watch n as the line started to move, I strike. Yes, heavy at the end but got snag after awhile. Can feel the fish is struggling but my grip sinker got stuck. Decide to release some line for the fish to move. Yup, after awhile, my sinker was free. I gave a hard pump n it is off the sea bed. Not very big so it was easy to wind back. It surface n saw it was a marine catfish about 1.5kg. Used my rod to lift it up. Hahaha…lunar new year present from the sea dragon king.

Marine Catfish Gathering

Was at bedok jetty on both 22 n 23-12-2006 night. I landed one on each night by using tamban as bait. Saw those who purposely target them caught as many as ten by using sotong. Estimate each night about near to 50 fishes with difference sizes was caught. Biggest is about 1kg plus while smaller one is just slightly more then 100g.

Another Queenfish Today

Date: 16-07-2006 Time: 3.30pm Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft. Reel: Shimano Calcutta 400S Line: 20lbs mono Rig: Long snood bottom feeder. Bait: Dead Tamban.

Skip yesterday night trip as the wind is too strong n sea is choppy. Choose to fish at daytime as it not so windy. Reach there around 10am. The tide has already incoming n the current was smooth. Missed my first one around 12pm when it took the bait on my cable car rig but the line gone loose. By the time I strike it already gone.

Half an hour later lost another one on the same method. Think over it could be the on coming wind that cause it. Reason is when the fish took the bait, my sinker will move n my main line will curve n loosen due to the wind blow. So there is no tension to help set the hook.

Decide to change rig n do bottom fishing instead. I use a long snood bottom feeder rig but I push my hook line high up to about 2ft above the sinker instead of the normal 6 inches. Reason is queenie will go bottom but not to the seabed as like the ray. I have use this method long ago before I start the cable car rig.

Haha… It finally work the third time…when my alarm goes off… I strike n yes hookup..the fish do a acrobatic jump n heading toward my right. To avoid entanglement, I use my rod to steer it back to my side as there is few rod there. As now the water is high, I play to weaken it n grab hold of my leader n lifted it up. Estimate about 2kg plus in weight.

A night with some action

Date: 13-01-06

After so many days of raining, today finally there is sunny. I reach home quite late as have lots of work to do before the lunar new year holiday. By the time I am ready, it was already 8.30pm. Decided not to go to jetty as the squid season is over. Instead I headed to a breakwater stone at east coast. My last fishing here is about a year back. Tide was already mid way up n water was calm. Tonight the moon was also big n bright. I quickly casted out two rod. One with a short n the other with a long snood bottom feeder. Bait was frozen squid. Around 10.30pm, my loomis rod got the first bite. It was shaking n I pickup to strike. Something heavy but no struggle. Haha.. winding in a eel.

it was coiling onto my rig. Quickly unhook n release it after photo taking.
Half n hour later the same rod got another bite. It bend down once n bounce back. Strike n wind it a eel tail catfish(similang).

The water could be still cold due to the past one week raining.
Passed this catfish to a malay angler nearby.
By now it was about 12am n the tide is about to full. I was checking on the rod when I saw my Daiwa long cast rod got a rattle. I decide to wind in to check when I notice a small barracuda was hook. After photo taking, I release it back.

After the tide turn down, no more action n I decide to packup as I was a bit tired after a busy working day. After all not so bad on tonight trip as at least have some action.

Date: 18-19/11/2005 Night. Time: 8pm – 5am.

c19-11-05Luckily enough the weather at the east side was very good tonight. Went to bedok jetty at around 8pm to catch some squid. It was quite rare as compare with the passed week. But still manage to got enough for bait used. Around 11.30pm, received a call from one of my old buddy who wanted to join me for the night fishing. Since the squid was rare here, we decide to headed to another spot for the fish. I quickly packup n went to pick him up. We reach there around 12.30am. The place has just after a down pour. Everywhere is wet.We quickly setup our tackles n casted out. By now the tide is full n current flow has stop. When the tide turn down, the current was very slow. Bait that casted out was quite lasting now. At 1.15am, suddenly my buddy Zziplex rod the line gone loose. Quickly he strike n wind in a palm size fingermark snapper. Twenty minute later, crok..crok… crok..a handline he casted out earlier was rolling n line running out. ..but by the time he reach it, the line running has stop. He strike the line but the fish has gone. Ten minute later, his Zziplex rod got another line loose, he wind n strike, but missed hook again. Then half n hour later, zzzeeer…zzeer.. suddenly his reel alarm sound. Grab the rod n strike but nothing hook. . Seem that the very slow current flow has affected the hookup rate. Those fishes when feel the tension of the line just throw out the bait immediately.
