Gar Fish

Date: 18-02-2018       Time: 1210pm       Rod: Penn PowerStick 10ft        Reel: Shimano Torium 20       Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader       Rig: Cable car       Bait: Live herring

Go for a short trip this morning. Tide is on the way up but current flow is slow. Bait fish is rare. Only caught a few. I use frozen one as bottom bait and live one as surface bait. Lucky the bottom bait was lasting so no need to change it often.

When the tide is full at 12 plus, I notice my rod tip rattle. I move closer to it and wait. Then the fish pull the line and my reel screech. I can see the fish jump up from the water surface. I wind it in and use my rod to haul it up. A nice size Gar fish. I gave the fish to a group of foreign work who was there enjoying the lunar new year holiday.

Brown Eel

Date: 05-02-2018        Time: 5.30pm to 8.30pm       Rod: Sasuca 12.6ft(Korean)        Reel: Shimano Torium 20        Line: 30lbs braided with 50lbs mono leader       Rig: Long Snood bottom feeder      Bait: Frozen Tamban

Went for a short trip. Tide was on the way down and current is fast. Jig for live bait but only got two. Set up two sets of tackles with surface and bottom rig. Bottom bait I used frozen tamban which I brought along.

Did get a surface hookup by a Gar fish but it manage to get away without paying the price.

Bottom bait is very lasting and when I was about to pack up that I found one of the rod bottom rig got stuck. I use hand to pull it free but was quite heavy at the end. I wind back and saw a brown eel at the end of the line. Its about four feet in length.

My friend wanted to fish tonight so I make a short trip to accompany him. I was late as I make some shopping before going down. I just grab a box of squid from my freezer to share with him.

Tide had just turning up and the current just moving but smooth. Casted out the tackle and we just sit around to chat.

By 10.25pm the current start to pick up faster. Then I heard my reel sounded and my rod tip bend. I pickup the rod and strike….heavy at the end but no struggle. I thought maybe the current had carry some rubbish and stuck on my line. It was only when the rig about to surface that I feel fish struggling. As it was very dark below the jetty, I ask my friend to shine some light. Notice it was a big size marine cat fish, I ask my friend to grab my line and haul it up.

Reach the jetty around 10am plus.  Saw two of my friends there who fish over night. They told me no fish. I joke that they didn’t do booking with the dragon king who control the sea. I told them I already use app to book some fishes. They laugh…and pack up.

I set up two sets of tackles. Both on top and bottom rig. Start jig for live tamban. Manage to get few pcs and immediately cast out. Continue to jig but can’t get any more as the current had die down.

The current flow turn early as the down tide is stronger. Still no sign of live bait even though trying non stop. One young guy lucky to get one and offer me the bait. I took and change my first rod.

Within minute, my reel screech…Strike and wind back. My first queen fish today. I gave it to the young guy who offer me the bait.

Then 1.20pm…My reel start screaming….Strike…Yes….this time is the bottom bait that got a hook up…..Barracuda….Ya….this fish mostly feed at night….but today it must be dame hungry and grab whatever offer.

Two fishes within an hour

Date: 08-12-2017      Time: 1800hrs      Rod: Penn Slammer 10.6ft White      Reel: Daiwa Saltist 40       Line: 30lbs Braided with mono leader      Rig: Cable car       Bait: Live herring

Went there early today for some live bait. Tide is going down and still have another two hours to change. Current flow is good and smooth. As usual, as the sun is still bright i will try surface fishing. Jig my first live bait and down it goes with the cable car rig.

While i was preparing my other tackle, my reel screech. I can see this wolf herring leaping out of the water surface and down again. I strike, wind back and lift it up. Good size wolf herring.

WolfHerring_20171208_183732

Time 1840hrs down tide     Rig: Long snood bottom feeder       Bait: Fresh dead Mackeral

After landing the wolf herring, the sun already going down so I change my method to bottom fishing.

I choose my only freshly caught baby mackeral as my fish bait and cast it out. Reason is the mackeral is faster deteriorate than other bait fish once caught.

Within few minute, my reel alarm sound…zzzzzz…..zzzzz….zzzzi…it keep going out….woww!!!…..I pickup the rod and strike….zzzzi…still running…Only after awhile that it stop and I start gain back some line. Some tug of war started and it move along with the current flow. I had to follow it moving toward the left. It try a few time wanted to dive deeper but i keep putting pressure by thumping my reel spool. Upon success of controlling it, the fish already near the jetty. A first time jetty visitor who was talking with me earlier come along with my rope gaff and pole. I surface the fish and steady it before passing the rod to him to hold while I grab the gaff. The first gaff was a small one and not strong enough to bring the fish up. I tie the gaff rope on the jetty railing and went back to my bike to take the bigger gaff. With two gaff in, I clear the area first as by now a big crowd had gather to watch the show. I pull it up and break the two poisonous stings before allow any photo taking. The fish weigh 13kg.

I bring along two pcs of small frozen cuttle fish as bait. I cut it into small strip for the hand line and it head I cast it out with my tackle set. First result come around 1900hrs when I notice my line coil around the jetty pillar. I pull and up come a small grouper around 200g. I release it and lower down the same bait again. 2130hrs, I saw my hand line spool moving a little. I decide to check and up it come this nice plate size grouper.
