DATE: 22-07-2007     TIME: 0930am to 2.00pm.   ROD: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.    REEL: Penn Jigmaster 500L    LINE: 30lbs mono     RIG: Cable car rig w/o float.    BAIT: Live Herring.

Went to the jetty yesterday night and was force to leave due to bad weather. It drizzle until this morning around 9am then stop. On seeing the weather is clear, I pickup my icebox and headed down. Reach there the jetty is quite empty due to the rainning. Tide was at the end of the low tide. Setup my tackle n manage to jig for some fresh herring as bait.

When the tide turn up, the current was smoothly except the sea surface was choppy due to a strong south western wind. Got my first hit at around 10.30am. A small wolf herring took my live bait n was struggling. wind in n lift it up by the rod. It weight at 300g.

The second hookup came at about 11.05am. My reel alarm has a short screech when this queenie took the bait. Without much problem I wind in n lift it up. It hit the scale at 1kg.

The third one came at 1.15pm. It hit the live bait hard n cause the reel alarm to scream. It fought hard with the help of the strong surface wind. It take me sometime to control it before it was gaff up by my friend Yusof. It weigh at 2kg.

Haha…was so happy to landed three in a trip. By 2pm, the sun was too strong for me to bare so decided to call it off.

Before I reach the jetty, Hon already call me to inform that Xiao Hei had just lost a 5-6kg leopard ray when trying to lift the fish up as they has no gaff to do the job. How they wish I was there earlier.

It was quite crowded tonight at the jetty. Manage to squeeze in a place for my rod to be casted out. Tide was coming up smoothly. By 10pm, the current started to change direction and move faster. A reel alarm sounded and it was PC 11ft kunnan boat master rod. He strike hard and easily wind in a big barracuda with his Daiwa Saltist 30 reel. Hoho…this fish tip the scale at 4kg.

An hour later it was LK turn. He saw his 11ft Kunnan boat master rod tip shake and take no chance. Quietly winding in a 1.9kg barracuda and lifted it up with the rod.

After this the current was at full flow and even size 7 sinker can’t hold bottom. On seeing this condition, everybody start to packup.

I Just Strike

Date: 14-07-2007    Time: 1220pm    Rod: Asahi power cast 12ft.    Reel: Penn 320GTI    Line: 30lbs mono    Rig: Cable car     Bait: Live herring(tamban)

Has been fishing since morning. Casted out about 20 tamban as bait ended with no action. Started to packup as the sun is getting very hot. Suddenly, uncle Sani rod alarm went off. Zzzzzz…Zzzzzz…..Zzzzzz….I look around but can’t find him…He was far away jigging for tamban. Everybody shouting at him but his reaction was slow. haha… I saw that and rush forward to pickup the rod and strike. Hoho…it jump up the surface far away and can’t see clearly..Queenfish was in my mind. It dive downward again. Halfway during the fight I feel something not right. This fish the speed is terrible fast. It gave very short dash with lightning speed here and there. At one point it almost went below the jetty as it has entangle a few line along the way and I have difficulty in winding back the line. But I keep putting pressure on it and manage to hold it well. It finally tired out and surface….WOW!…a big spainish mackeral…no wonder the speed of cutting water so fast. It was easily gaff and lift up. Hoho…It hit the scale at 4.3kg.

My friend is the one who saw it first n inform me. By now the line has gone loose. I pickup the rod n strike…ehh…nothing le…no feeling…as I wind back my line. haha…when the rig surface…a small queenfish was taging behind the hook. The Stealth Fighter

DATE: 16-06-2007     TIME: 0930am     ROD: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.     REEL: Penn Jigmaster 500L     LINE: 30lbs mono.     RIG: Long Snood Bottom Feeder     BAIT: Fresh Dead Tamban(Herring)

Went there yesterday night to catch squid n fishing. Stop at around 2am as the downtide current was too strong to fish n also squid was rare. Take some rest at my mobile home until this morning.

Headed in again at around 7am. Tide was just started to turn up. Current was slow n the sea was calm. Tamban was quite rare initially. Set up my tackle n casted out with bait balance last night. Bait was fast disappeared within five minute. The water look promising so I keep on changing bait every ten minute.

It paid off around 0930am. I just finish changing the bait n was sitting down to rest. I saw my line slacken alittle but didn’t bother thinking it was my sinker move by the current. Five minute later I saw more slack on the line…I take a closer look n it seem my line is moving slowly. Without hesitation…I pickup the rod n wind in the slacken line follow with a strike. Ohhh… yes…it heavyyyy….I make another pump….yessss,…  it is a fish hookup…It dive downward taking some of my line….I pump again to bring it up…It follow up n was moving along with the current toward the right side. I follow n start winding back line….There is many rods on my right…I shouted to them to wind back their line but the reaction of this anglers was too slow…The fish now was very near to the surface but still can’t be spotted. It entangle many line along the way. In my mind I thought it was a cobia as it swim slowly n stay on the surface. At one stage it almost went below the jetty when I was waiting for other angler to bring their rod over to distangle it. But I didn’t gave chances.. I keep on winding n pumping to keep the fish in control. It surface finally n turn out to be a stingray. Hooo….at least not so bad. It could be a nightmare if it was a cobia…as it could easily go below the jetty with so many line entangle together.

A malay uncle come with his rope gaff n manage to gaff it easily. The spike was taken out immediately. I weigh it n it tip the scale at 10kg sharp. Haha.. after some photos taken…the sky started to rain…I cut the fish into five parts n gaven to those who has help me to landed it.

Two years back he missed one due to too “kan chong” n fall down before he pickup the rod to strike. But this time he make no mistake. He is Xiao Hei, one of my forum member n bedok jetty kaki. They were fishing at the left end side while i fish on the right end side. But when the alarm went off, I can hear it screaming.

It was already the early morning of sunday. Most anglers has either left there or already sleeping. Only some hard working one is still hanging around. It was quite quiet by now as compare to the early night. Tide is half way up n about to change direction. Suddenly i heard reel alarm sounded. From my side I look toward the left side. I saw Xiao Hei rushing toward his rod follow by LK. Xiao Hei pickup the rod first n strike…haha.. n I heard LK say….”wow U so fast le” hehe…

Yes…the fight is on… From far it look like could be a stingray…His Slammer rod is fully bend….hoho… big one…..They started to shout for me to get gaff…Haha… I was already preparing…When my gaff is ready…the fish has swim toward my side n Xiao Hei has come over n are winding back line. When the fish surface…WOw !….COBIA……haha…The fish try a few time wanted to swim below the jetty but was stop by this fast learner angler. He stand on the jetty railing n use his rod to have full control of the fish..I missed the first gaff when the fish is struggling furiously…Xiao Hei manage to calm it down by lifting the head above water. I take the chance to gaff on it stomach. With Raymond help…I lifted it up to the jetty flooring….LK bring out a scale n I weigh it. It tip the scale at 11.8kg. Hoho… second cobia landed this year….what next ?????

Weather was good n the tide is just nice. Decided to sacrifice some sleep tonight n go squid catching. Reach there the sky still bright n manage to jig for about 10pcs of tamban. I have bring some frozen one along but still fresh one is the best. After casting out my rod, proceed to setup my squid lamp n net. Night fall n some squid start to arrived. One by one it come at interval. Did check my bait n was very lasting. Looking at the smooth moving current n the calm sea surface..Haha…tonight no wind……I know I stand a great chances. Did have some false alarm but only to hook up some rubbish.

Finally…I hear the sound I waiting for…It was almost midnight already. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….my reel alarm goes off. Haha…pickup my rod n strike…Yes….Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz it goes pulling along my line…..Woooooo……that shiokkkkk…Then I heard a water splash….Wow…it jump up the water surface….Hahaha…my mind started to think…At night only three types of fishes will jump up the surface…COBIA….likely as it was so strong….THREADFIN….not likely as here the threadfin don’t fight so strong…BARRACUDA…same reason as the threadfin…Hmmmm…By now the fish has started to swim inward..I wind my line as fast as possible until I feel the weight. It has headed towards the under of the jetty n has cross some line…Now every body is crowding round to see what fish. I shouted to those rod owner to release their line…They do so n I was able to steer the fish out. Hoho…..the most unexpected fishes to caught at night has surface….The Queenfish again….My third three days in the row. But this one is BIGGGGGG. It also my third night caught queenfish after so many years of fishing. One angler offer to help me hold the rod so that I can go n get my gaff. Easily gaff it n haul it up. Eager to know the weight….I took out my scale n weigh it….Hoho….It tip the scale at 5.6kg….n I have re-wrote my personal best on QueenFish from surffishing. Hahaha….very satisfying…..Wow….now it already pass midnight….The fish so big how to put in the fridge ????….Hoho…no choice….have to do the cutting…One old friend come along n I ask him to watch for the squid while I do the cutting..I fillet it out. After this two days practicing….I am more perfect now on cutting…Hehe….job easily done…n time to packup…Haha…by now it was already 1.30am….Morning guys…

Bigger Queenfish

Date: 20-05-2007   Time: 10.20am    Rod: Daiwa Long Cast 12ft.   Reel: Abu 7000 Red    Line: 25lbs mono    Rig: Cable car rig    Bait: LIve Tamban

Bedok jetty was crowded on saturday evening. But the sky was full of rain cloud n lightning when I reach there. Waited for almost 2 hour for the sky to clear before I set up my light to catch squid. Casted one rod out with dead tamban as bait n it was so lasting. Whole night I only need to change one time bait. This gave me the chance to concentrate on catching the squid. Was there until 2am n decide to packup to take a rest.  Went in to the jetty again this morning around 7.30am. Tide was at the lower end n current was slow. While waiting for the tide to turn around, I spent time jigging for tamban n keep it alive. Finally the tide turn up around 9.15am. Down goes the cable car rig. Another rod with a bottom feeder rig. !0.20am I finally hear the sound I waiting for.. My abu reel alarm went off with a short screech. Just nearby so pickup n strike..The fish make a acrobatic jump on the sea surface n dive deep down. Haha…but I already catch a glime of it. Yes….queenie n bigger than yesterday one. Gave that fellow a hard pump n it was on the way up. However it has cross two line by now n make up some messy there. I told the other two anglers to release the line so that I have a better control on it. I bring it to the surface n hang it head up in the air. Within minute it already slump n I ask one guy to grab hold of my leader n lift it up. Hoho…it about near to 2kg. Decided to take home as it was already half dead. Plus the yesterday one…haha…I will be having fish fillet very soon.
