Lizard Shark

Date: 17-07-2006   Time: 8 to 11pm.   Rod: Daiwa longcast 12ft.   Reel: Penn 155L Beachmaster.   Line: 30lbs Braided line    Rig: Long snood bottom feeder    Bait: Strip of green eye(chay mak)

Went to search for squid. Only catch a handful as the tide is near the bottom n current has already slow down. But lucky there is no wind. Around 9pm saw my rod tip a bit shaking n went to strike it. Something heavy at the end but it keep me guessing when winding back. It turn out to be a lizard shark slightly more than 0.5kg. This was my first cast n the bait was a left over green eye strip from last friday night which I has prepare ready for a cast but never use it. I bring it back n keep in the freezer for future use. Haha…

Another Queenfish Today

Date: 16-07-2006 Time: 3.30pm Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft. Reel: Shimano Calcutta 400S Line: 20lbs mono Rig: Long snood bottom feeder. Bait: Dead Tamban.

Skip yesterday night trip as the wind is too strong n sea is choppy. Choose to fish at daytime as it not so windy. Reach there around 10am. The tide has already incoming n the current was smooth. Missed my first one around 12pm when it took the bait on my cable car rig but the line gone loose. By the time I strike it already gone.

Half an hour later lost another one on the same method. Think over it could be the on coming wind that cause it. Reason is when the fish took the bait, my sinker will move n my main line will curve n loosen due to the wind blow. So there is no tension to help set the hook.

Decide to change rig n do bottom fishing instead. I use a long snood bottom feeder rig but I push my hook line high up to about 2ft above the sinker instead of the normal 6 inches. Reason is queenie will go bottom but not to the seabed as like the ray. I have use this method long ago before I start the cable car rig.

Haha… It finally work the third time…when my alarm goes off… I strike n yes hookup..the fish do a acrobatic jump n heading toward my right. To avoid entanglement, I use my rod to steer it back to my side as there is few rod there. As now the water is high, I play to weaken it n grab hold of my leader n lifted it up. Estimate about 2kg plus in weight.

Brown Dog Shark

17062005.jpg

Date: 17-06-2005   Time:10.45pm    Rod: SureCatch Pro Beach 13ft.    Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster    Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Single hook long snood bottom feeder.   Bait: Frozen squid     Hook: S/S Long shank 4/0

Check with the weather report and it was find at this place. Reach there around 7pm. It was already quite crowded there. Tide was about to full but current flow is slow. Set up to catch squid but none was on sight. Only set up one rod with a bottom feeder rig. Bait was frozen squid. Initial check on the bait show quite lasting. This type of sign show chances of hooking up a fish is great. When the tide turn down, current flow was good but still no sign of any squid. I decide to keep my kerozene lamp and concentrate on the fishing. Just change my bait and casted out. Suddenly saw my line gone loose. Strike and feel some struggle at the end of the line. Initial thought it was a marine cat fish. When it surface, it was a brown dog shark about near to two kilo. On seeing it not so big, I just use my rod to lift it up. Nothing happen after this and I packed up around 2am.

This time it’s bigger

Date: 09-04-2006 Time: 10.45pm Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft. Reel: Penn Jigmaster 500L   Line: 30lbs mono Rig: Long snood bottom feeder.  Bait: Dead Tamban Hook: Long shank size 5/0 S/S with 80lbs wire trace.

Today is the twelve day of a lunar calendar. It also mean the beginning of a good current flow n tide cycle. It already 8.30pm. Looking at the sky the weather look fine. Decided to go for a short session of fishing n squid hunting.
Reach there around 9pm. Already somebody light up a squid lamp there. Decided not to light up my lamp but to wait n see. Instead I fixed up my tackle n casted out. My initial bait was cuttle fish. The current was fast as it already quite high. Have to erect up my rod to minimise the water resistance of my line. Proceed to fixed up my squid net n do squid serching under the jetty light.
My first check on the bait was lasting. Fifteen minute later I decided to change the bait to tamban as the passed day, most of the ray catches was on this bait. Continues to do my squid serching.
Just about ten minute later, suddenly my reel alarm went off. I pickup n strike. Hoho… this fellow is bigggrrrrr. It took my line n headed out straight to deeper water. It took me a few time to tighten up more drag to stop this fellow. When it finally stop, hooof….meters n meters of line has been strip. Without hesitating, I gave a few hard pump n it already at midwater. Very lucky was that by now the tide has passed it full n the current has die down. So this fellow can’t use it weight n the current flow to prolong the fight. But it still manage to do some very strong tug of war with me. haha…I finally win the battle as this fish has no match on the powerful rod that I am holding. Ya…it proof that this rod still can take on bigger monster as it handle this fellow with ease.
I surface it n after making sure that it has tired out, I pass my rod to a angler there to hold while I fixed up my gaff. Upon landing, it weigh at 11.5kg. It is a female long tail brown stingray. Double check n it did not pregnant.haha…..

It was almost near to 12am after I took photographs on it. As i have to work today, I decided to gave the catch to the angler that help me to hold my rod.

Short Tail Brown Stingray

Date: 27-03-06   Time: 9.15pm   Rod: Penn Powergraph Surf 12ft.   Reel: Penn 500L Jigmaster   Line: 30lbs mono   Rig: Long snood bottom feeder      Hook: Long shank size 5/0 with steel wire trace.   Bait: Fresh Tamban

It was drizzling the whole day. I finish my work early n check on the tide table. There is a good running tide started from 1601hrs 0.3m to a high of 2.6m at 2239hrs tonight. Very lucky the drizzle stop around 5.30pm. Decide to go for some squid catching. I also bring along my heavy surf rod which I normally don’t during weekday trip.

After a fast dinner, I grab my squid lamp n off I go. It was still bright when I reach the jetty. Only a few young angler around. Don’t see any regular there as I think because of the drizzle earlier. Infact I was the only one with a heavy surf rod. Hehe… tonight is all my world. Fixed up my squid net n saw a group of tamban swimming around. One scoop n up it come about five. Setup n tackle n down it goes. Bait was quiet lasting on initial check. Current was running fast up. Squid was hardly seen. Can’t even get a pickup after 9pm. I change my bait on my second wind back as it already smash by the fast current n some crab bite.

Around 9.15pm, my reel alarm goes off. I pickup n strike. Wow! powerful! It took off my line n goes. Ripping out about 50 meter of line non stop. When it finally stop, I saw my reel only left half spool of line. Without hesitation, I pump it up n start winding back my line. After I sure it has up from the seabed, I relax a bit as I prepare to wear the fish down. I am alone now n I might have to gaff it myself after I bring it in. The fish do a few more tug of war with me but I am in total control. A while later, very lucky for me a old bjt kaki (Fei) come along cycling. He saw me fighting the fish n offer to gaff it for me. His first attempt to gaff it fail n the fish make a desperate run. I manage to bring it back to surface n ask Fei to hold my rod for me instead. Took over the gaff n sink it deep in. Easily lifted up n it was a short tail double spike brown stingray. It tip the scale at 7.2kg. After this I only able to scoop about 6 small squid n I packup around 12.30am when the sky turn very red with lots of rain cloud gathering.

Big Puffer

Caught this puffer about 2kg this early morning around 3am. It quietly took my bait of a small cuttle fish on a long snood bottom feeder rig n the line gone loose. It gave some strong struggle when about to surface. Too heavy to be lifted up by my Daiwa rod so I use hand to grab the leader instead. It was release back after photo taking.

my trip 14-01-06 night

Went back to the breakwater stone I fish on friday night. It was already 9pm when I reach there. Tide is coming in but water there is still shallow. Casted out two rods with a short n another long snood rig. Bait was some yesterday night left over squid n a packet of sarong which was given to me by a angler who can’t finish it on saturday morning. As the water is still low, both rig all I used sarong as bait. Ten mimute after I casted out, I got the first bite. It was from my Daiwa rod n I wind in this silver bream.

After this there is no more action. The weather become more windy n water is abit choppy when the wsilverbreamater is high. I fish until 1am n decide to packup so that can take some rest.

This morning went to BJt around 8.30am. I used two rod with cable car rig. Around 10am my loomis rod tip has a bend n the reel alarm sound. A queenie took my live bait n make a acrobatic jump. It manage to unhook before I reach my rod to strike.  Fish for another hour before I call it off when the sun is too hot.

A night with some action

Date: 13-01-06

After so many days of raining, today finally there is sunny. I reach home quite late as have lots of work to do before the lunar new year holiday. By the time I am ready, it was already 8.30pm. Decided not to go to jetty as the squid season is over. Instead I headed to a breakwater stone at east coast. My last fishing here is about a year back. Tide was already mid way up n water was calm. Tonight the moon was also big n bright. I quickly casted out two rod. One with a short n the other with a long snood bottom feeder. Bait was frozen squid. Around 10.30pm, my loomis rod got the first bite. It was shaking n I pickup to strike. Something heavy but no struggle. Haha.. winding in a eel.

eel

it was coiling onto my rig. Quickly unhook n release it after photo taking.
Half n hour later the same rod got another bite. It bend down once n bounce back. Strike n wind it a eel tail catfish(similang).

eeltailcatfish

The water could be still cold due to the past one week raining.
Passed this catfish to a malay angler nearby.
By now it was about 12am n the tide is about to full. I was checking on the rod when I saw my Daiwa long cast rod got a rattle. I decide to wind in to check when I notice a small barracuda was hook. After photo taking, I release it back.

After the tide turn down, no more action n I decide to packup as I was a bit tired after a busy working day. After all not so bad on tonight trip as at least have some action.

my first fish on year 2006

Date: 02-01-2006    Time: 0800hrs to 1500hrs.   Rod: Loomis n Franklin Big Game 12ft.   Reel: Shimano Calcutta 400S     Line: 20lbs mono    Rig: Single hook short snood bottom feeder.    Bait: Cut squid.    Hook: Beak size 5/0.

Rain, rain n rain. Yesterday night can’t fish all because of rain. Lucky this morning the weather was fine. Off I go around 8am. Went to the first spot but it was already occupied. No choice just drive along the east coast n look see look see. When come to this place, suddenly come to my mind that it have been more than ten year I didn’t fish at this place. Haha… take alook there n it was not crowded. Decide to gave it a try. Tide was already coming in fast but current was smooth. Quickly two rod was casted out with single hook short snood bottom feeder rig. Baits was left over squid from friday night. Didn’t bring much bait so a single squid was cut into two to save bait. Bait casted out was not lasting also.
It was my second round of bait changes when I was about to cast out the second rod, suddenly, zeer…zeer… zeerr….my shimano 400S calcutta reel was screaming. Quickle put down my second rod n pick up the first rod to strike. Yes, can feel the heavy weight at the end of the line. By now some malay anglers already gather around to see what fish is it. I told them it was a pari. The fish initially swim to my left. I quickly steer it to the right as this place the left side is quite hazard. Luckly the fish is not so big n I manage to bring it close without much effort. When it surface, it was a long tail brown spotted stingray about one over kilo. A malay angler help me to bring up this fish by grabing onto my rig body. After photo taking I gave him the fish to take home. Haha… finally landed my first fish for year 2006.
